Powder Day - creating the illustration

I thought it might be interesting for followers of my work to see the progression of my new holiday card POWDER DAY. As you can see from the bottom sketch originally I was contemplating having the snow boarder closer to the foreground. But I feared that visually your eye would drift to the left side of the card only. By making the snowboarder smaller hopefully people will peer more closely at the image soaking up all the juicy detail in the trees and snow and the mountains in the distance. Plus I like the quick pencil sketch of the boarder enough to know she'll be showcased in one of my next illustrations. This time in the foreground with a skier lost way back there in the trees. Which, as a skier who enjoys the trees, is always a good thing do. — Mike Biegel 09.02.12
